Rotogravure, more commonly known as roto or gravure among printing industry professionals is a process of printing which involves engraving or transferring an image onto an image carrier with the help of an rotational printing press. Rotary gravure presses are known to be the the fastest and widest presses in operational in modern times, capable of printing almost everything, right from narrow labels to wide rolls of vinyl flooring.
The Process of Rotogravure
This modern type of intaglio printing utilizes copper coated cylinders as the image carriers, on which the desired image is embossed as a collection of small cells. The cylinders are then made to rotate in an ink fountain to let the cells absorbs all the ink that it can. The excess ink is generally eliminated or being scraped from the non-image areas by employing a blade made of steel, rubber or plastic which is called the doctor blade. Webs of paper are made to pass between the cylinder and a rubber-coated impression roller and the ink is transferred by a combination of capillary action and the pressure of the substrate into the engraved cells of the cylinder, helped by the rubber surface of the impression roller.
In Rotogravure Printing Machinery, there are usually three methods of photoengraving that are used to engrave gravure cylinders, where the cell open size or the depth of cells can be uniform or variable.
They are:
1.Conventional with uniform cell size and variable cell depth
2."Two positive" or "Lateral hard dot" with variable cell size and variable cell depth
3.Direct transfer with variable cell size and uniform cell depth.
